I just finished this game, and, simply...wow.
I've never played anything quite like it. It's composed of essentially 16 different boss fights, and each one is very different and very challenging. There's some strategy that needs to be figured out for each one and it really requires the player to think things through.
The game itself is beautiful. I get the feeling that on a system other than the PS2, it would have been a lot smoother and looked even better -- there's some clipping and framerate problems. Still, the visuals are an accomplishment.
One thing I've never experienced in a game before is sympathy for the things you have to defeat, but here you're actually sort of viciously killing what seem to be very docile, peaceful creatures. It makes you feel bad for them -- it's a strange feeling, but it makes the game more realistic, I think. It shows that killing things actually is an emotional occurrence and takes a toll on a person. It's not just "die, evil people!"
Maybe the best thing about the whole game is the music. I'm not a big game soundtrack guy, but I wouldn't mind having this one. Beautiful orchestral score that really sets the emotional mood of the story.
The ending is incredibly sad. I won't give it away, but man, it's a wallop.
Despite some control issues and some problems with the camera, frame rate, I definitely recommend this game. Just don't play it expecting it to make you feel good about yourself. A-.
